How to Earn their Buy-In

You give more support to what you give more sweat in creating.

Early in my career I struggled to understand why certain members of my team weren’t as passionate about my work as I was. I believed in a bigger purpose and how we were trying to help.

To them, it was simply a job.

It was silly of me to expect anything else at the time. I had shared the vision, I’d talked about our plans.

But I hadn’t put them in a position to make their work anything more than a paycheck. Without any vested interest in what we were creating, it was nearly impossible for them to have a deeper passion for the work.

So I changed things.

  • I started sharing emails from customers that had been directly encouraged or impacted by what we’ve done.
  • I showed them how their specific role fit into the bigger picture and why it was so crucial to our success.
  • I listened to any and all feedback on how we can improve what we do, what they thought we could create, and then gave them the power to create items for us.

I gave them the opportunity and space to create something for the brand so that they had a piece of themselves in the brand.

The more you sweat to create something, the more you’re invested in seeing it succeed.

If you’re struggling to get some team members to “buy-in” and put in the effort for a project, ask yourself:

  • How can I create space & opportunity for them to create something so they’re more invested in what we’re doing?
  • How can I make sure they understand why their work is so important and how it fits into the impact made on our customers?
  • How can I ask better questions to discover how to better motivate them?

The more you sweat for it, the more you’ll be invested in the journey.

I help organizations cultivating a WINNING mindset to compete every day. If this sounds like a focus that your team members and company needs, I would love to discuss my workshops and keynote options to determine the best fit for your organization. Click here to start the conversation.
